Sexual Being Sex, whether it be solely for procreation or recreation, is one of life’s delicious pleasures. And whether you are doing it alone or with a partner, yoga can make what feels good by nature, feel amazing through practice…

Power to the Core! While yoga is often touted as a tool for ameliorating stress and anxiety and increasing our flexibility, we don’t hear much about the way in which it totally reshapes the power center of the body and makes sex more stimulating. Our core muscles are literally where our power comes from. The power to move and hold the body upright is dependent on the abdominal wall and low back. The primary organs responsible for digestion, filtering and elimination are in our abdomen, as are our sexual organs. Learning how to power our core both inside and outside the bedroom can have dramatic benefit for our longterm health and pleasure.

Navasana Baby I have yet to discover a primary posture better suited for fine tuning pelvic control than boat pose. In general navasana isometrically targets the primary muscles responsible for nutation or movement of the pelvis. In particular navasana increases the strength and endurance of the psoas, and the six pack abs (rectus abdominis). These muscles, along with muscles in the front of the thighs, are responsible for bringing the legs and torso together. A healthy, strong psoas is also what creates that undulating, wave like motion in the pelvis…what we often refer to as the pelvic thrust. So if you want more motion in the ocean…navasana is going to be one of the key components.

Boat posture also helps strengthen the quads in the front of the thighs and loosen the hamstrings. All of this together means you will have greater range of motion when you run, climb, swim, have sex, etc. Navasana also does wonders for reducing or eliminating low back pain from sitting at a desk or standing for long periods of time. Sex: Good sex can be a workout in and of itself. Control of the psoas can lead to you and your partner having better communication and cooperation…think yin/yang. So…as I like to tell my students on a regular basis…if you want to have an amazing sex life STAY in NAVASANA…if you want a boring sex life…drop out of the posture.

Tip: Hold the posture for a minimum of 20 seconds. For beginners with tight hamstrings, bend your knees. For a challenge try holding boat for 20 - 30 seconds and then lowering and lifting - from full to half boat - 20 reps to start. See you on the Mat! John Merideth
